What Happened To Finding Satisfaction In Your Own Spouse?

What Happened To Finding Satisfaction In Your Own Spouse

Just as you drink from your own fountain, you should find your fulfillment in the love of your spouse.

Drink from your own well, my son—be faithful and true to your wife.  Why should you beget children with women of the street? Why share your children with those outside your home? ~Proverbs 5:15-17 TLB

“Drink water from your own well” is a picture of faithfulness in marriage. It means to enjoy the spouse God has given you. In the desert land, water is precious, and a well is a family’s most valuable possession.

In Old Testament times, it was considered a crime to steal water from someone else’s well, just as it was a crime to have intercourse with another person spouse. In both cases, the offender endangers the health and security of the family.

Husband’s Duty

Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love. Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman? ~Proverbs 5:18-20 NLT

God never intended marriage to become boring, lifeless, and dull. Sex is a gift God gives to married people for their mutual enjoyment. Real happiness comes when we decide to find pleasure in the spouse God has given us and to commit ourselves to meeting that person’s needs.

The real danger is in doubting that God knows and cares for us. We then may resent his timing and carelessly pursue sexual pleasure without his blessing.

The Destiny Of The Man Given To Adultery

For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. ~Proverbs 5:21-22

Though no human eye may follow him to the brothel, the motel room, or the secret rendezvous, yet God sees all that takes place. “Secret sin on earth is an open scandal in heaven.” Man cannot sin and get away with it. Sin’s built-in consequences are inescapable. As Jay Adams counsels:

Sinful habits are hard to break, but if they are not broken, they will bind the client ever more tightly. He is held fast by these ropes of his own sin. He finds that sins spirals in a downward cycle, pulling him along. He is captured and tied up by sin’s ever-tightening cords. At length he becomes sin’s slave.

Death Of Wicked and Ignorance Of God

He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness. ~Proverbs 5:23 NLT

Will die: “Refers to eternal death in opposition to the eternal life of the righteous, not merely to either a premature death (see v. 11) or clinical death.”

In the greatness of his foolishness: “Oh, what madmen are they that bereave themselves of a room in that city of pearl for a few dirty delights and carnal pleasures!”

Do you believe you are vulnerable to sexual immorality? Why or why not? If so, how vulnerable?
